DJ Ready Red (Geto Boys) Interview

DJ Ready Red is a producer and DJ from Trenton, NJ. He frequently visited his family in Brooklyn in the 1970s and attended block parties in the Bronx. Inspired from Afrika Bambaataa’s hit song, “Planet Rock”, Red wanted to become a DJ. He formated The Mighty MCs with Prince Johnny C and Brother Radee. In 1987, Red stopped in Houston to visit family before on his way to Los Angeles. He entered a DJ battle and ended up staying in Texas permanently. Red was introduced to J. Prince, founder of Rap-A-Lot Records and was signed, and eventually becoming the DJ and producer of the Geto Boys. The group began recording their debut album, Making Trouble, which was the first time Scarface movie samples were included into production. Red also contributed production on Willie Dee’s 1989 solo album, Controversy. Red parted ways with the group and returned home to New Jersey by 1991, after business disputes. He continues to DJ and produce records with Fran-Ada Productions.
