AKIR | Interview
From Brooklyn, NY, AKIR is a hip hop artist, producer, and songwriter known for his complex lyrics and social-political content. He entered the hip hop scene in 1994 as an on-air personality at the high school radio station, WNMH. In 1998, AKIR ranked second out of 50 in Howard University’s Verbal Armageddon emcee competition. Collaborating with his brother Southpaw, he co-produced a track for Immortal Technique’s album, Revolutionary Vol. 1. Soon after, AKIR released his first song, “Best Friend”, which appeared on DJ N’finit’s mixtape, The Blockbuster Vol. 1. In 2005, Akir and ten other emcees formed a group called The Reavers and released the album, Terror Firma. Soon after, Akir released Legacy, his debut solo album. In 2009, he released the mixtape, The Secret, with DJ Static and Statik Selektah. Akir has completed six international tours, nine domestic tours, and over 500 total shows. Additionally, AKIR has been involved with the Flocabulary project, collaborating with 9th Wonder to transform the story of Romeo & Juliet into a Hip Hop song for school curriculums. He’s currently working with at risk youth teaching writing, production, and recording with the non-profit organization Art Start.
