CHOPS of Mountain Brothers | Interview

From Philadelphia, PA, CHOPS is a producer, rapper and former member of the hip hop trio known as the Mountain Brothers. In 1999, the group’s debut album, Self: Vol. 1, was released and is arguably one of the most classic hip hop albums from Philadelphia. The group is considered cultural pioneers, being one of the first Asian American hip hop groups, and CHOPS has been known for using a combination of programmed and live instruments in his work, as opposed to samples. They produced national radio and TV commercials for Sprite and Nike, and even performed at the Golden Ring Awards with DJ Roli Rho of Fifth Platoon. The Mountain Brothers also filmed a music video for the single “Galaxies (The Next Level)”. In 2003, the group parted ways shortly after the release of their sophomore album, Triple Crown. Since then, CHOPS has worked exclusively as a producer, including collaborations with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Bahamadia, Paul Wall, Talib Kweli, Ras Kass, Chamillionaire, Bun B, Raekwon, Dave Ghetto, Mystic, DJ Revolution, DJ Babu, and more. In 2011, CHOPS produced the track “Creep” with The Lonely Island and Nikki Minaj that was featured on SNL and has reached over 37 million views. He has provided music for the MTV reality show Rob & Big, the soundtrack for the independent film Dark, and contributed music to the soundtracks for the films Brown Sugar and House Of Wax.
