Dru Ha (Duck Down Music) | Interview
From White Plains, NY, Dru Ha is a music and marketing executive, and Co-CEO of Duck Down Music, alongside partner Buckshot. During summer breaks while attending Syracuse University, Dru Ha interned at SBK Records, working college radio promotions for acts like Vanilla Ice and Arrested Development. Upon graduating college, he began working at independent label Nervous Records, where he became head of the hip hop department. Dru Ha executive produced projects from Black Moon, Funkmaster Flex, Smif-N-Wessun, and Mad Lion. In 1994, Dru Ha and Buckshot formed Duck Down Management to formally manage Black Moon and Smif-N-Wessun, and later modified the name to Duck Down Music Inc, along with signing hip hop groups Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. In 1996, 2Pac invited Dru and his artists to work on the never released One Nation, an album that would attempt to show solidarity between east and west coasts. Duck Down artists have also collaborated with Mary J. Blige, Method Man, Spike Lee, Wyclef, and Aaliyah. In 1998, Dru Ha and Buckshot launched Vision Marketing, an agency providing promotion and cross marketing opportunities for Duck Down album releases for companies Ecko Unltd, Sketchers, LRG, and others. In 2006, Dru Ha accepted a position at Cornerstone Promotion as Director of Urban Music. He worked on Nike’s campaign with the song “Classic” by Rakim, KRS-One, Nas, Kanye West, and DJ Premier, which was Grammy-nominated as “Best Rap Performance By A Group”. In 2010, Pepsi hired Cornerstone to create a campaign for Pepsi Max NFL Audible, which ran TV spots and featured Big Boi (OutKast), Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B., and Talib Kweli. In 2011, Duck Down partnered with 2K Sports to present an open call to aspiring producers and emcees for submissions of original, sample-free compositions for a chance to receive placement in the NBA 2K’s game soundtrack and a trip to New York to perform at Duck Down’s CMJ Showcase. Dru Ha ran in the 2011 ING New York City Marathon, raising over $15,000 for the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. In support of the run, Duck Down Music released an exclusive song, “Run To Remember” by Buckshot, Smif-N-Wessun, and Promise, with production by Double O of Kidz In The Hall. Proceeds were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
