El Da Sensei of The Artifacts | Interview

El Da Sensei is an emcee from Newark, NJ and member of the influential 90s hip hop duo, The Artifacts. After El Da Sensei and his partner Tame One sent a demo to Bobbito at WKCR in New York, the group was soon signed to Big Beat/Atlantic Records. They developed a fan base of hardcore hip hoppers and graffiti artists, which sparked a sub-culture called backpackers. The Artifacts released their debut album in 1994, Between A Rock & A Hard Place, with production from Buckwild and T-Ray. The Artifacts’ sophomore album was released in 1997, That’s Them, in which many hip hop fans claim as an underground classic. Since then, El Da Sensei has released numerous solo albums and traveled around the world, appearing on several compilations, from Japan to Norway to Germany. In 2003, El released his debut solo album, titled Relax, Relate, Release, with features from Sadat X, Organized Konfusion, J-Live, Mike Zoot, Asheru, and others.
