Kokayi | Interview
Kokayi is a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, emcee, producer, and educator. The Washington D.C. native produces his own music, sings and writes his own lyrics, and is self-taught on several instruments. In 2007, Kokayi independently released his debut album, Mass Instructions, toured the world, and won a 2009 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his work as a vocalist and co-producer on “Lovin’ You (Music)” by Ethiopian singer Wayna. He also produced Wayna’s “Moonlight Rendezvous” single, which spent seven consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Top 10 R&B/Hip Hop Singles & 100 Hot Singles sales charts. He’s produced the MTV Jams staple “JetSetter” for Tabi Bonney and created the theme to BET’s reality show “How I’m Living”, as well as music for various commercials on MTV and Nickelodeon. Now with QN5 Music, Kokayi’s 2010 album, Robots & Dinosaurs, garnered critical acclaim with the lead single “RoxTar”. Check out his 2011 album, Pacific Coast Highway.
