Nola Darling | Interview
Nola Darling consists of two very talented emcees, Alex (Queens, NY) and Jaq (Los Angeles, CA), with tongue-in-cheek sensibility and spit-fire flows. The two met at New York University’s high school drama program. They embarked on a global road trip, investigating international hip hop culture in South Africa, London, the Netherlands, Paris, and Rome. They created the indie film company, NOU LA Productions (translating loosely to “we are here, alive, and well in the thick of struggle”) and NLP’s first project, a music/travel documentary, WORD?! I Didn’t Know (____________) Could Get Down Like That!. In 2008, the film premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles. Upon their return to NYC, the ladies released Nola Darling’s Pretty Gitty Mini-Mixtape as an introduction to their unique style and perspective. They continue to release episodes of A Rude Gal’s Guide To… on YouTube, which provides an honest glimpse into their philosophy and lifestyle. Nola Darling is currently working on their next project with hip hop producer Kwamè.
