Bootie Brown (The Pharcyde) Interview

Bootie Brown is an emcee from Los Angeles, CA. In the late 80s, he met Slimkid3, and Imani as dancers and Bootie was a backup dancer for Fatlip. The group met Reggie Andrews, a high-school music teacher who influenced their debut album. They also met producer J-Swift and recorded their first demo in 1991, which included the popular songs “Passin’ Me By” and “Ya Mama”. The Pharcyde signed to Delicious Vinyl in 1991 and were featured on Brand New Heavies’ album, Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1. Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde was released in 1992, becoming one of the most influential alternative hip hop albums of the 90s. In 1995, The Pharcyde released Labcabincalifornia, which included the hit song “Runnin'” and was featured in the film 8 Mile. The album had production from J. Dilla and Diamond D. The group released Chapter One: Testing The Waters, and EP in 2000 minus Fatlip who ventured on a solo career. Later that year, they followed up with the full-length album, Plain Rap. In 2004, Bootie and Imani continued with the group name and released Humboldt Beginnings. In 2005, Bootie appeared on “Dirty Harry” from the Demon Days album by the Gorillaz.
