DJ Too Tuff of Tuff Crew | Interview
DJ Too Tuff, aka the Duece Ace Detonator, is a Philadelphia DJ and hip hop icon from the Tuff Crew. Too Tuff gained fame in the 80s and 90s by producing and performing cuts on the group’s platinum single “My Parta Town”. In 1989, the song peaked at #23 on the Billboard Rap charts, while their album “Back To Wreck Shop” reached #74 on the Billboard R&B album charts. The Tuff Crew released four albums, including production by Kool Keith and Ced Gee on their debut album, Phanjam EP. The group has shared stages with 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Rob Base, DJ E-Z Rock, LL Cool J, and more. Tuff Crew is considered a forefather of the turntablist movement due to several dynamic DJ tracks on the Tuff Crew albums. DJ Z-Trip, DJ Q-Bert, A-Trak, and DJ Shadow have all expressed that DJ Too Tuff was an influence and inspiration for style and music. In 2008, Tuff Crew released their latest album, DJ Too Tuff’s Lost Archives, which contains DJ Too Tuff’s best solo work.
