One Be Lo (Binary Star) | Interview

One Be Lo is an emcee from Pontiac, MI. As half of the rap duo Binary Star, he is also a member of the world champion b-boy crew, Massive Monkees. One Be Lo’s mother worked as a beautician and he developed appreciation for women, fashion, culture, discipline, and forgiveness. His parents divorced when he was 14 years old. He ran in the streets with older kids before going to prison at age 18. While in prison, One Be Lo read extensively and converted to Islam after seeing it wasn’t what he was told it was as a Christian child. He also formed the rap group Binary Star with his partner-in-crime Senim Silla, and upon being released from prison in 1998, they debuted with the self-released album in 1999, Water World. In 2000, Binary Star’s sophomore album, Masters Of The Universe, sold 20,000 copies. One Be Lo established Subterraneous Records, enabling him to release his own albums, as well as promote promising artists from Michigan. In addition, he has competed in b-boy competitions around the U.S., Germany, Asia, and other parts of Europe. One Be Lo’s solo albums follow the topic of stages in life, with titles Project F.E.T.U.S., S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., S.T.I.L.L.B.O.R.N., The R.E.B.I.R.T.H., L.A.B.O.R., and his most recent album in 2012, K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H.
