What Inspires AWKWORD
From Poughkeepsie, NY, AWKWORD is an emcee, revolutionary, and political activist. As a straight-A student that was running from cops and suspended from school for fighting, AWKWORD learned to filter his anger and alienation through words and music. He is the founder of World View, a global hip hop collaboration effort that donates 100% of the proceeds to Guns 4 Cameras, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating guns through the education and empowerment of inner city youth. The organization’s spokesperson is Pharaohe Monch, whom has joined the founder, Hezues, in speaking with youth around the country about hip hop and making smart choices. World View has contributions from artists in 20 countries, with production from Domingo, Harry Fraud, The White Shadow, Tranzformer, and more. Guest appearances include Joell Ortiz, Sean Price, KRS-One, and more. In addition, AWKWORD is affiliated with various anti-racist activist groups, leading actions across the country. He has performed for the Anti-Defamation League, the Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Martin Luther King Day among other political events. AWKWORD has also volunteered at a teen center, soup kitchen, and Green Haven Prison. AWKWORD has shared stages with Grandmaster Caz, Masta Ace, J-Live, Asheru, CunninLynguists, Poison Pen, and more. In 2006, AWKWORD released a compilation album titled “The Sub-Way”, with features from Raekwon, Killah Priest, Ill Bill, Necro, Tragedy Khadafi, Guru, Scram Jones, and more. That same year, he followed up with an EP titled “The AWKWORD EP”. In 2008, AWKWORD released his solo debut album, titled “See The Light”. It became the inspiration for World View after receiving radio play around the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
