Mel Flannery | Interview

Mel Flannery is a singer and composer from Appleton, WI. At age 12, she studied classical voice. With her dad accompanying on guitar, Mel playing coffee shops, weddings, and local venues. They released two albums of mostly cover songs while Mel was in high school. In 2002, she moved to Brooklyn to attend Manhattan School of Music as a Vocal Jazz Performance major. At age 19, Mel started a band for her own compositions, called Mel Flannery Trucking Co., named after a distant cousin’s trucking company in her native Wisconsin. Rooted in soul with a heavy jazz influence, the band recorded three albums between 2003-2010 and toured the United States. Mel and band member Lee Pardini were nominated as songwriters for the Just Plain Folks Best Song in the Jazz Category in 2009 for their song “Fairy Tales”.
