Sage Francis Interview

Sage Francis is a Rhode Island emcee and spoken word poet. Inspired at a young age by Public Enemy, Sage recorded his first tape, Homegrown Demo, in 1996. Soon after, he became lead vocalist of the band Art Official Intelligence, and spearheaded a radio show. His popularity grew from his live freestyle performances and winning the Super Bowl MC Battle in 1999 and Scribble Jam’s freestyle championship in 2000. He released several mixtapes under the series name Sick Of, which was compiled of 12” singles, demo sessions, live performances, and radio freestyles. Sage also competed on a national poetry slam team in the Providence community in 1998, 1999, and 2002. Sage later launched Strange Famous Records and then released his debut studio album, Personal Journals, in 2002. In 2005, he became the first hip hop artist signed to punk rock label Epitaph Records. He released three albums on the label; A Healthy Distrust, Human The Death Dance, and Li(f)e. In 2014, Sage released his latest album, Copper Gone, and can be purchased here.
