Mystic Interview

Mystic is a singer/songwriter and emcee from Lower Lake, CA. She grew up in California, Hawaii, Mexico, and Oregon before settling in Oakland, CA. She competed in emcee battles in the early 90s and dropped out of high school in 1991. Mystic began teaching art in 1996 and began her recording career, appearing on Digital Underground’s album, Who Got The Gravy. She signed with Goodvibe Recordings in 1999 after the label co-chair heard her on Bahamadia’s mixtape. In 2001, Mystic released her debut album, Cuts For Luck & Scars For Freedom, with features from Shock G and A-Plus. The song “W” with Planet Asia was nominated for a Grammy Award that same year. In 2002, Mystic was nominated as Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the BET Awards. In 2003, the album was re-issued, including two new tracks produced by Kanye West and an appearance by Mos Def. In 2007, Mystic toured Europe with Dave Ghetto, Hezekiah, and DJ Munch.
